Rep (Repetition)
One complete execution of an exercise movement, from start position through full range of motion and back. Reps are the basic unit of most resistance training programs.
Progressive Overload
The gradual increase in training demands — through added weight, volume, or intensity — that challenges the body to continue adapting. It is a foundational principle of strength and fitness development.
VO2 Max
The maximum volume of oxygen a person can use during intense exercise. It is a widely used indicator of aerobic fitness and cardiovascular capacity, influenced by both genetics and training.
HIIT
High-Intensity Interval Training — a workout format alternating brief periods of near-maximum effort with recovery intervals. It is time-efficient but physically demanding.
DOMS
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness — the muscle stiffness and tenderness that peaks 24–72 hours after exercise. It results from normal microscopic stress on muscle fibers during adaptation.
RPE
Rate of Perceived Exertion — a self-reported scale, usually 1–10, indicating how hard an activity feels. It is a practical way to gauge and manage exercise intensity without equipment.
Active Recovery
Low-intensity movement performed on rest days to support circulation and reduce muscle soreness without adding meaningful training stress to the body.
Compound Exercise
An exercise that engages multiple muscle groups and joints in a single movement pattern, such as a squat or deadlift. Generally contrasted with isolation exercises that target one muscle group.

Repetitions (Reps) and Sets
A rep is one complete movement — one push-up, one squat, one curl. A set is a group of reps performed without resting. "3 sets of 10 reps" means you perform the movement 10 times, rest, then repeat that sequence twice more.
Progressive Overload
The principle that the body must be gradually challenged with more stress over time — through added weight, more reps, reduced rest, or greater range of motion — in order to continue adapting and improving. Without progressive overload, fitness tends to plateau.
Rest Interval
The recovery period between sets. Shorter rest (30–60 seconds) keeps heart rate elevated and is common in conditioning workouts; longer rest (2–3 minutes) allows more muscular recovery for heavy strength training. Rest intervals are a deliberate training variable, not just downtime.
Compound vs. Isolation Exercises
Compound exercises recruit multiple muscle groups simultaneously — think squats, deadlifts, and rows. Isolation exercises target a single muscle group, such as a bicep curl. Most well-rounded programs include both.
Cardiovascular and Intensity Terms
Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Exercise
Aerobic (meaning "with oxygen") describes sustained activity at moderate intensity — walking, jogging, cycling — where the body uses oxygen to produce energy. Anaerobic ("without oxygen") refers to short bursts of high-intensity effort, like sprinting or heavy lifting, where energy demand outpaces oxygen supply.
HIIT — High-Intensity Interval Training
A training format that alternates short periods of near-maximum effort with recovery intervals. HIIT is time-efficient and has been associated with cardiovascular and metabolic benefits in research settings, though it's demanding and not appropriate for every individual or fitness level.
RPE — Rate of Perceived Exertion
A self-rated scale (commonly 1–10) that measures how hard an activity feels. An RPE of 3–4 is light effort; 7–8 is challenging but sustainable; 9–10 is maximal. RPE is a practical tool for managing intensity without equipment.
VO2 Max
The maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise. It's considered a marker of cardiovascular fitness. Higher VO2 max values are generally associated with greater aerobic capacity, though it is influenced by both genetics and training.

Recovery and Adaptation Terms
DOMS — Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
The muscle soreness that typically peaks 24–72 hours after unfamiliar or intense exercise. DOMS is caused by microscopic muscle fiber stress and is part of normal adaptation — not a reliable indicator of workout quality. Severe or persistent pain, however, is different and warrants professional attention.
Active Recovery
Low-intensity movement — walking, light stretching, gentle cycling — performed on rest days to promote blood flow and reduce soreness without adding training stress. It contrasts with complete rest and is often built into structured programs.
Overtraining
A state in which training volume or intensity exceeds the body's ability to recover, leading to performance decline, persistent fatigue, mood changes, and increased injury risk. Overtraining is a genuine physiological concern, not just tiredness, and typically requires a significant reduction in training load and medical guidance if severe.
